GCSE Science Fiction: Yesterday's Future

GCSE students attended the coca-cola Cinemagic Film Festival at QFT today. The event was titled Science Fiction: Yesterday's Future and was l
led by Elaine Scaratt who is Chief Examiner
for Media Studies.

The day provided an introduction to film genre and the characteristic codes and conventions of science fiction. Significant moments in the genres history showed how science fiction film, like any other media text, is rooted in contemporary anxieties and issues. The interactive morning session was supported by clips from film such as Metropolis, Frankenstein, Back to The Future and Blade Runner. In the afternoon pupils were treated to a screening of Men in Black.

AS at Cinemagic

On Thursday 26th, Students attended a course which introduced pupils to editing with Final Cut. Students did not prior knowledge of the editing software, but by the end of they knew how to set up a new project, import footage, edit skills, using effects and transitions, keyframing opening credits and how to export project to DVD.

On Friday 27th, Students attended Film Fusion: Music Composition for Film. This event developed their understanding and appreciation of the process of music composition for films.

The morning session was led by Miguel Mera, Principal Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, writer and film composer. This session supported students with their listening, appraising and composing skills and used a variety of film clips. Miguel took them through a range of examples of music in film to consider how composers achieve particular atmospheres, effects and meaning.

In the afternoon session Miguel interviewed music composer David Arnold (Stargate, Independence Day, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace) before he took a variety of questions from the audience.

Subject: Calling all young film critics

Do you enjoy watching films? Would you like to share your views on what you see on the screen with others? Ever thought of being a film critic?

If so, this year’s Coca-Cola Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People is currently selecting a jury panel of 10 to 18 year olds to watch and judge short and feature films.

The panel will be required to watch all of the films that are being screened in competition during the Festival (18th Nov-4th Dec) and to choose a number of winning entries.

As a jury member you will spend a number of evenings and weekends at the Festival, helping to decide the winners of ‘Best Feature Film for a Children’s Audience’ and ‘Best Short Film for a Children’s Audience’.

To be in with a chance to sit on the jury simply write an imaginative letter or e-mail, no longer than 300 words, explaining why you would like to be on the jury and send it by Friday 6th Nov to: Jury Competition, Cinemagic, 49 Botanic Avenue, Belfast BT7 1JL or email: claire@cinemagic.org.uk

Please include your name, address, age, contact telephone number and email address. You must have permission from your parent/guardian to be a jury member, be able to attend all of the jury films and be able to arrange your own transport to and from the Festival.

QFT

As we are now running GCSE and AS Moving Image Arts, the pupils were treated to a viewing of Edward Scissorhands at the QFT. A big congratulations must be extended to the 28 pupils on their behaviour at the event. The film itself is much better viewed on the big screen and the pupils commented on the striking colours evident in the film. Watch out Tim Burton, there are a few pupils interested in German Expressionism!!!!!
